big mac sauceMcDonald's is making bottles of its famous Big Mac sauce available in the US for the first time.

The fast-food chain will be offering 10,000 bottles of the sauce at restaurants nationwide and through its social media accounts starting January 26.

The company sold its first bottle of Big Mac sauce on eBay last year for more than $15,000.

Then it sold smaller bottles of the sauce at restaurants across Australia for 50 cents a piece.

This will be the first time that bottles of the Big Mac sauce will be available to customers in the US.

The company said its giving away the sauce "to continue to change expectations" following the release of its new "Grand Mac" and "Mac Jr."

"There’s still more to do and we’re always striving to be better, so we can’t wait to show you what’s next," the company said in a press release.

Tesco is buying wholesale food supplier Booker in a £3.7 billion deal

Tesco CEO Dave Lewis, left, and Booker CEO Charles Wilson.

LONDON — Supermarket Tesco on Friday announced a deal to merge with Booker, the UK's largest wholesale food retailer.

Tesco is valuing Booker at £3.7 billion ($4.6 billion) under the terms of the deal, representing 205.3p per share or a 12% premium on Thursday's closing price.

Northamptonshire-based Booker is the UK's biggest wholesale food supplier and sells branded and white label goods to over 500,000 customers across the UK, such as convenience stores Budgens and Londis, catering companies, pubs, and restaurants like Byron Burger, Wagamama, Carluccios, and Prezzo.

Booker had sales of £5 billion in 2016 and made a pre-tax profit of £150 million.

Tesco CEO Dave Lewis said on a call with journalists on Friday morning: "The merger creates the opportunity for new innovations in the way we serve Britain food." He said that while "both businesses are quite different... both have food and customers at their heart."

Lewis made clear on the call that the key motivation for the deal is to take Tesco into what he called the "out of home" food market — people going out to eat at restaurants or catered events.

He told journalists that the merged group will supply "great food for more people across the whole of the £195 billion food market. In short, we’re creating what we think can be the UK’s leading food company."

Bruno Monteyne, a former Tesco exec turned retail analyst at Bernstein, says in a note sent to clients on Friday morning: "This deal is an excellent consolidation opportunity in the sector and unlocks the power of the largest wholesale supplier and largest food retailer."

However, Monteyne and other analysts flag that the deal will likely face close scrutiny from the competition watchdog because of the overlap in the convenience store market. Booker owns the Budgens, Londis and Premier chains.

Still, Tesco shares opened up over 7% on Friday morning on news of the deal:tescoBooker shares have opened even higher, topping 13% at the open in London:bookerThe deal represents a significant new chapter in Tesco's story and will hopefully help it put 2014's accounting scandal behind it once and for all. Lewis was brought in to help turn around the supermarket in the wake of the scandal and has recently made good progress in growing sales.

Lewis says in the statement announcing the deal:

"Tesco has made significant progress in turning around our UK retail business. This Merger with Booker will further enhance Tesco’s growth prospects by creating the UK’s leading food business with combined expertise in retail, wholesale, supply chain and digital. Wherever food is prepared and eaten – ‘in home’ or ‘out of home’ – we will meet this opportunity with the widest choice and best service available."

Booker CEO Charles Wilson says in a statement:

"Booker is committed to improving choice, prices and service for the independent retailers, caterers and small businesses that we are proud to serve. We believe that joining forces with Tesco offers the potential to bring major benefits to end consumers, our customers, suppliers, colleagues and shareholders."

Booker shareholders will get 16% of the newly merged group. Wilson will join Tesco's executive committee and board once the deal completes. Tesco says it reckons it can make £200 million of pre-tax synergies — business speak for cost savings — a year by the end of the third year after the deal completes.

Nick Bubb, an independent retail analyst, says in his morning email "The Daily Retailer:"

"Our instant reaction is that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will have a field day with this, as although Tesco is mainly a retailer in the UK and Booker a wholesaler, Tesco does own the One Stop convenience store chain that competes with Booker’s interest in symbol groups and convenience store retailing (via Premier and Londis etc), so it is by no means clear that the CMA will allow things to proceed very far without having a good look at the overlap."

FTSE 250-listed Booker was founded in 1835 by George and Richard Booker. The company founded and used to sponsor the prestigious Booker Prize for literary fiction in 1968. (The prize is now sponsored by fund management firm Man Group.)

JPMorgan Cazenove advised Booker on the deal, while Greenhill, Barclays and Citi all advised Tesco on the deal.

The 10 best places for a power breakfast in New York City

norma's ny breakfast

As fewer and fewer busy execs and other people of influence seem willing to put in the time for a long lunch these days, the networking and deals that once happened over fancy midday meals are now happening at all times of the day, including breakfast.

Keeping that in mind, we turned to our friends at Foursquare City Guide to find the top-rated places to have a power breakfast in New York City. To determine the list, Foursquare took into account a number of factors, including ratings, visits, the overall sentiment of its users' reviews, and the use of words like "power,""business," and "meeting" in reviews.

A number of classic New York power establishments made the list, but there are a few relative newcomers as well. Here's where to go to get your day started on the right foot — with eggs, coffee, and a side of business talk .

SEE ALSO: The 13 best places to eat ramen in New York City

10. Michael's

24 West 55th Street, Midtown

A longtime destination for decision-makers in media and finance, Michael's is famous for its power breakfasts and lunches. You'll even find a "NY power breakfast" on the menu — it's a plate of egg whites, spinach, and citrus salad.

9. Norma's

119 West 56th Street, Midtown

Located to the side of the lobby at Le Parker Meridien hotel, Norma's is perhaps best known for its "Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata," which comes topped with different amounts of Sevruga caviar. The cheaper version ($100) comes with one ounce of caviar, while the more expensive one ($1,000) comes with 10 ounces.

A note under the super-size frittata reads: "Norma Dares You to Expense This," a tongue-in-cheek nod to the restaurant's corporate crowd. The restaurant also has stellar blueberry pancakes and smoothies.

8. The Breslin

16 West 29th Street, NoMad

The Breslin has what many consider to be the city's best full English breakfast, served with pork sausage, black pudding, bacon, fried eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms.

There are also some excellent (and smaller) options, including a sourdough pancake served with Dutchess County maple syrup, as well as a chilled grapefruit drink with ginger sugar and mint.

Starbucks is facing a huge crisis — and the CEO refuses to say how he's going to solve it (SBUX)

howard schultz starbucks

Starbucks is facing a crisis, and the CEO refuses to offer any specifics on how he's going to solve it.

The coffee chain's stores are being inundated with mobile orders, and that's drastically slowing down service and alienating customers. Same-store transactions, a measure of customer traffic, dropped 2% in the most recent quarter, according to the company.

Starbucks' shares fell more than 4% on Friday morning.

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz went on CNBC on Friday to address the problem.

"It will be fine," he said, repeatedly asserting that the company would solve the issue. "I'm not really worried. I know that the market has overreacted."

When asked for specific solutions, such as whether he would rearrange the stores or hire more people to handle the bottleneck of orders, he demurred and reiterated that the company would find a fix.

"We are facing this congestion problem and the anxiety of the customer," he said. "It is a problem that we will solve. It won't take us that long. We have been on it now for 30 days, and in the quarters that follow we will get back to the experience that you have come to expect."

In some ways, it's a good problem to have, as it highlights the growing popularity of Starbucks' mobile order-and-pay program. But the negative effect on service has dragged down customer traffic, and that could become a permanent issue if Starbucks doesn't find a fast fix.

Starbucks is also facing pressure from declining traffic at shopping malls and restaurants as customer shopping habits change and people increasingly choose to eat at home.

But Schultz insisted that Starbucks is immune to that industrywide trend because the coffee chain provides an emotional experience for consumers, he said.

"Unlike a department store, unlike the apparel business, Starbucks is not going to be affected by the downturn in traffic, which will be significant and have an adverse effect on the overall retail and restaurant sector," he said.

With that experience now being dampened by long lines and delays in stores, it remains to be seen whether Starbucks' customer traffic will bounce back.

Chipotle could 'bear the biggest brunt' of Trump’s trade war with Mexico (CMG)

$

Chipotle

Chipotle could "bear the biggest brunt" of President Trump’s trade war with Mexico, according to Instinet analyst Mark Kalinowski.

Trump has proposed a 20% tariff on goods from Mexico as a way to help pay for a wall along the US-Mexico border.

The tariff proposal, which the Trump administration walked back saying it was just one option being considered, could make goods from Mexico more expensive. That could pose a huge problem for restaurant chains like Chipotle that heavily rely on Mexican imports.

An avocado price increase in particular would be a huge challenge for Chipotle, which goes through more than 99 million pounds of avocados each year — and during some months, sources them exclusively from Mexico.

By Kalinowski's estimate, Chipotle may get as many as 70 million pounds of avocados from Mexico annually.

"Our belief is that the company generally obtains about 70-90% of its avocados from Mexico, all of its limes, the majority of its jalapenos, less than half of its tomatoes, and small amounts of other items (e.g., cilantro)," Kalinowski wrote in a note published Tuesday. "In other words, should a 20% tariff be enacted for goods imported from Mexico, Chipotle likely would bear the biggest brunt of this potential impact on food costs compared to the other companies we cover."

If a border tax is enacted, it's likely that restaurant chains would be forced to increase menu prices to offset the higher cost of goods — and protect profit margins — by passing it on to customers.

But Chipotle doesn't have much flexibility to pass on extra costs to customers when the company is still trying to recover from a months-long E. coli outbreak that sent its sales tumbling.

Revenue declined 14.8% to $1 billion in the third quarter and same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, dropped 21.9%. Net income for the quarter was $7.8 million, a decrease from $144.9 million for the period last year. The company reports fourth quarter earnings on Thursday.

Chipotle declined to comment on how the proposed tax could affect the company, saying that at this point it's "purely speculative."

"There are a host of variables that can impact upon food costs (weather, supply and demand, and public policy decisions, among others)," Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold said. "If any events impact our food costs in material ways, we’ll make that information available in a timely fashion, but we’re not going to speculate about what any of these events might mean."

These are our picks for the best hotel restaurants around the globe — indeed, they're so good they're worthy of a trip alone.

Beachcraft, 1 Hotel South Beach, Miami

Picture Tom Colicchio in linen pants and flip flops, and you've got Beachcraft pretty much figured out: it's a locavore New Yorker on vacay, and mere steps from the sand of Miami Beach. Order the grilled Key West shrimp, best washed down with a draft "Say High!" cocktail: highland park 12-year whisky, fresh lemon, citrus hops and honey.

Cafe Boulud at The Surrey, New York City

We know what you're thinking: wait, another New York hotel restaurant made the cut? Yes. This one, from Chef Daniel Boulud, may be located on East 76th Street, but it will transport your taste buds to Boulud’s native Rhône region: the seared duck breast is served with sunchoke, quince, and wild rice citrus coriander jus; the mocha bavaroise topped with whiskey ice cream. You know what they say on the Upper East Side: you can never be too rich, and that goes for food, too.

Pot at The Line Hotel, Los Angeles

Skip the chichi restaurant in the hotel's 2nd floor greenhouse and head straight to the lobby, where there's an edible Koreatown that was tailor-made for Instagram stories: you'll find hickory smoked duck breast on the menu, but there's saccharine Giant Fruity Pebbles Snow Ice with condensed milk, too. Pot is hands-down one of the best hotel restaurants.

The world's coolest underwater hotels

Shark Aquarium in Paris underwater room

Some of the world's biggest hotel brands are coming up with plans that are sure to stun even the most seasoned of travelers.

First, they made villas that looked like they were floating on water off islands in Asia, but now they're taking these to new heights — or depths. In recent years, underwater hotel rooms have taken over the resort world. This next big thing in the industry allows guests a front-row view into the stunning scenes that take place under the sea.

The idea is still up and coming, but a lucky few places have already put the plans into place.

Here are the world's coolest underwater hotels so far.

Atlantis The Palm in Dubai

The underwater suites at Atlantis provide some of the most breathtaking scenes in the world. Sitting under the Arabian Sea, these rooms allow you to sleep with the fishes — in a good way. It’ll set you back about $5,000 a night to do so though. Choose from two suites, both of which have luxurious lounges, spa bathrooms, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Manta Resort on Pemba Island, Tanzania

The Swedish-designed structure floats above a lively sector of the Indian Ocean where tons of coral reef fish swim. Occupants have seen squids and octopus attach themselves to the 360 degree windows, and with coral already starting to build on the anchor line more animals are surely on the way. This floating, double room costs $1,500 a night.

Utter Inn in Västerås, Sweden

Europe’s most famous underwater hotel room is anchored in Lake Mälaren. The small house (80 square feet featuring little more than two twin beds, a table, a bathroom, and a camping stove) sleeps two and runs for $1,750 a night. The windows looking out into the water don’t offer stunning views of coral reefs or exotic fish, but you may see some perch.

cut las vegas

Whether or not you hit the jackpot, Las Vegas has a restaurant for you.

Be it over-the-top tasting menus with spendy plates, or hole-in-the-wall comfort cuisine – here are 10 Las Vegas restaurants where you can eat like a high roller right now.

L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon

To describe the casual sister restaurant to French kingpin Joël Robuchon (the man with more Michelin stars than any other in the world) you first need to understand his namesake, Joël Robuchon— a fine dining institution that’s considered one of the best Las Vegas restaurants and the pinnacle of haut French cuisine. At his eponymous hotspot, which counts a handful of locations through the world, Robuchon plates an 18-course tasting menu of progressive French cuisine rife with caviar, truffle, and foie gras. L'Atelier, in the MGM Grand, is his unbuttoned spinoff, a modern boîte with counter seating that still presents refined, globally-influenced dishes rooted in French technique.

Raku

Somewhat of a hidden gem, Raku, off the strip, is an unfussy izakaya that centers on robata, a style of Japanese charcoal grill cookery. While the space itself is nothing much to look at, you're coming here for, arguably, Sin City's best Japanese small plates – a true taste of Tokyo in the form of grilled pork ear, green tea soba noodles, and Kobe beef liver sashimi. Choose from a la carte or tasting menu dining, and after make sure to hit newer next-door addition, Raku Sweets.

Libertine Social

While Las Vegas chef Shawn McClain made a name for himself cooking seasonal American cuisine at Sage in Aria, at Mandalay Bay's new Libertine Social, he's weaving vegetables heavily into his American Bistro menu. The venue itself resembles an upscale modern bar, and plates are meant to jive with the perfect potations of Tony Abou-Ganim, one the world's top leaders in craft cocktails.

I'm 23 years old and I've gone without eating at Olive Garden my whole life — here's why that was a huge mistake

Every time I tell one of my friends I've never been to Olive Garden, I get a similar response: something along the lines of horror and shock.

So I finally decided to give the Italian American chain a try.

Keep scrolling to read about my first experience at the restaurant.

Olive Garden has two locations in NYC.

I ate at the Times Square location. The multi-story restaurant offers great views of the bustling square below.

When I walked in, I was greeted by the hostess and then had to take an escalator up to the top floor.

8 popular American foods that aren't what you think they are

orange lobsterFood fraud is a $50 billion annual industry— and you're probably eating some of the evidence.

From Kobe beef to Parmesan cheese, restaurants and grocery stores are packed with foods that aren't quite what they seem.

Food makers and retailers cutting corners and hiking up prices can result in feeding consumers some less-than-truthful marketing.

Now transparency is more important in the world of food than ever before. Consumers want to know what they're eating — and they don't respond well to being duped.

Here are eight foods that might not be what you think they are.

1. Wasabi

About 99% of all wasabi sold in the US is fake, reports The Washington PostThe vast majority of wasabi consumed in America is simply a mix of horseradish, hot mustard, and green dye.

True wasabi is difficult to grow and extraordinarily expensive, costing $160 a kilogram at wholesale prices. If you're eating real wasabi, you're consuming the stem of a plant, grated and pulverized into a spicy paste. It reportedly has a more complex taste, but needs to be eaten immediately — within 15 minutes, the freshly grated wasabi begins to lose its signature flavor.

2. Lobsters

More than one-third of restaurants, including Red Lobster, swap out lobster for more inexpensive substitutes in their dishes, reports Inside Edition. In February, the news organization ran DNA tests on lobster dishes from 28 restaurants across the country. Thirty-five percent of the samples contained cheaper seafood, such as whiting and langostino.

While langostino means "little lobster" in Spanish, the crustacean is more similar to a hermit crab — and less expensive than American lobsters.

3. Kobe beef

While restaurants across the US offer menu items like the Cheesecake Factory's "Kobe burgers" and pricey "Kobe steaks," the vast majority of these claims are false. Only eight restaurants in the entire US serve real Kobe beef.

Since Kobe beef costs more than $20 an ounce, if you're purchasing something that is supposedly made of Kobe beef and isn't absurdly expensive, you're probably being scammed.
